Scarlet Pimpernel Snippets of Trivia #2

Did You Know?

The Scarlet Pimpernel was a play before it was a book--it opened in London on January 5, 1905.  Three years later, Baroness Orczy, the playwright, novelized the story and went on to write seventeen more novels and one short story about the swashbuckling hero.

Surprisingly, I heard that Baroness Orczy actually wrote it as a novel first, then the silly publishers wouldn't print it. So, brilliant as the baroness was, she developed it into a stage play, which became a HIT. *Then* the publishers thought it was a good idea.

Just goes to show you that publishers aren't always right. : )

Isn't that fascinating? Sir Percy might never had been had she not had the ingenious idea to write it as a play. Baroness, we salute you. You are a genius.

I'm loving these trivia bits. :-)
